Shakur Stevenson: Haney “Crowd Draw” open for 140 game

Shakur Stevenson says he'd be willing to move up to 140 in 2025 to fight Devin Haynie because he feels he's “audience appeal.” The timing isn't ideal for a Haney vs. Shakur showdown next year.

Former two-division world champion Haynie (31-0, 15 KOs) was on a high, picking and choosing opponents to beat to win two world division titles. However, the 26-year-old Devin has not been seen since he was brutally defeated by Ryan Garcia on April 20 and there are many questions about whether he will be able to bounce back from that loss.

Shakur vs. Haney in 2025?

Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) now has a full card ahead of him in 2025, with a title defense of his WBC lightweight belt against upstart Floyd Scofield on the Turki Alalashih card on Feb. 22 in Riyadh and after this potential title fight against the #1 contender William Zepeda in the summer.

A third fight against Gervonta 'Tank' Davis in 2025 is also possible, provided the match can be arranged. The money issue will determine if Tank agrees to fight Shakur. A massive offer should have been made to Tank.

“We can fight. It all depends on Devin as well. I'm ready to fight any fighter. They called me three times to negotiate. I'm willing to go to 140 because I think Devin Haney is an attraction for the crowd and I think it would make sense,” Shakur Stevenson told Bet on yourself podcast when asked if he would be interested in a fight with Devin Haney.

“Whatever you've seen from me, you're going to see a better version of on February 22,” Shakur said of his title defense against rookie Floyd Scofield in Riyadh. “I said if Zepeda leaves me, I will fight him. A lot of casual fans know this kid and think he's a good fighter.

“I also want to beat who the slackers love. If random people like this person. I'm going to beat an underdog,” Shakur said of why he chose Scofield as his next opponent.”

Shakur's next fight

It's interesting to hear Shakur explain why he chose the 22-year-old Scofield as his next opponent over the more dangerous Andy Cruz or Raymond Muratala.

Claiming to focus on who the slackers like is a weak argument for why Shakur chose Scofield over Muratala. Stevenson seems to have chosen Floyd Jr. because he is an easy fight with no risk. Scofield is an inexperienced prospect who has looked beatable in his recent fights against second-tier opposition.

After Shakur's close game against Edwin De Los Santos last year, where he almost lost, he is not risking a good fight and risking this fight with Tank to end up being a bye.

Shakur wants the gold he can get by fighting Gervonta Davis, and if he goes up against Cruz or Muratala, he could be beaten. The gold bars disappear at this point.
