Heavyweight Johnny Fisher's father, “Big” John Fisher, confronted journalist Garrett A. today. Davis to tongue-in-cheek him for allegedly calling Johnny's 10-round split decision win over Dave Allen a “robbing” of their Undercard fight last Saturday night at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia .
“Big” John took issue with Garrett's characterization of Johnny's victory, which many boxing fans saw as controversial due to the way Allen took control of the fight from the fifth round. Fans were calling it a robbery left and right and thought Allen (23-7-2, 18 KOs) should have won by a clean decision.
Allen dropped the inexperienced 25-year-old Fisher (13-0, 11 KOs) in the fifth round and hurt him in every round from that point on. It looked like a fairly easy fight to score, but the judges made a mess with two of them scoring for Fisher. I watched it and had Allen win the last six rounds.
Promoter Eddie Hearn made the mistake of putting a rookie with just 31 rounds on his back as a pro with Dave Allen. In hindsight, it was a bad move.
Fisher looked to be doing well in the tenth, but then was stunned and had to hold. It took away from all the positive things that Fisher was doing in the round. That straight hand he was against should have resulted in warnings or punishment. He got away with it the entire fight.
The results
95-94: Fisher
96-93: Allen
95-94: Fisher
Big John Fisher: “I totally respect the opinion of anyone who thinks Dave won the fight, but the way you and Spencer are overreacting. I thought you were serious journalists. You have shown how incapable you are of reporting a proper fight,” John said to iFL TV.
Garrett A. Davis: “Did Johnny win the fight John?”
Big John: “Yeah, he won the fight. I looked back at him. He won rounds one through four. Round ten and seven, you could count him next to Johnny. So to call it robbery and disgusting. Garrett, you were welcome in my house before. You will never be welcome in my house again because the way you are behaving is a complete, utter disgrace.
“Okay, I'll tell you to your face because I'm a man. I can't hold back. Anyone can say that Dave won the battle. Dave's team themselves said it wasn't a robbery, and you're yelling stuff like that. I've lost all respect for you. People used to say to me, 'Don't respect Gareth Davies'. I lost all respect.”
Garrett: “That's good. You can go ahead and have dinner and we will continue with the interview. Thanks John.”
Big John: “Never come to me again and never ask my advice again.”
Garrett: “I don't need your advice.”
Big John: “You see, sir, because you have no idea. I'll tell you when we meet. I'll tell you to your face. Merry Christmas to you, GAD.'
Garrett: “Merry Christmas. Let's continue with the interview because John doesn't want to talk about things. He's just angry.”
