The IBF has ordered #5 Subriel Matias and #6 Gabriel Valenzuela into talks for a light welterweight title eliminator to decide the #1 contender to challenge new 140lb champion Richardson Hitchins for his belt.
Matthias, 32, has an excellent chance of returning to world title fight to regain the old IBF belt, which he lost a year ago, a 12-round unanimous decision defeat to Liam Parro on June 15.
It will be a tough task for Valenzuela to beat Matias because he is an excellent puncher and will put him under constant pressure. Gabriel will likely follow Paro's plan, using movement, excellent clinch, striking and other rough tactics to try and win.
Elvis Rodriguez chose not to fight Matthias (21-2, 21 KOs). Otherwise, he would face the former IBF welterweight champion in the title eliminator. This is his loss as he is expected to fight Yomar Alamo next.
It's Jake Donovan reporting IBF orders Matias-Valenzuela talks.
Gabriel Valenzuela (30-3-1, 17 KOs) has won his last five fights since losing to Montana Love by narrow decision in 12 rounds in Las Vegas on May 7, 2022. Valenzuela's other two losses came against William Zepeda and Luis Hernandez Ramos.
