Defending champion Yannick Siner moved into the third round, while last year's runner-up, Daniil Medvedev, lost to a qualifier in the second round.
World number one and defending champion Yannick Sinner roared back to reach the third round of the Australian Open as Iga Svetek set up a showdown with Emma Radukanu.
Sinner dropped a set for the first time in 14 matches when he lost the first game to Australian wildcard Tristan Schoolgate, but he regained control after a slow start to cruise through 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3 against world No. 173 at a cool and windy Rod Laver Arena on Thursday.
It was Sinner's 16th straight win in an ominous sign for next opponent Marcos Giron.
“It's always difficult to play against someone I don't know very well. He was playing much better than me in the beginning,” said the 23-year-old Italian, who also won the US Open last year.
In the night session, last year's runner-up Daniil Medvedev was knocked out of the tournament by 19-year-old US qualifier Learner Tien in a huge shock in Melbourne.
Thien, ranked 121st, stunned the world No. 5 6-3, 7-6 (7/4), 6-7 (8/10), 1-6, 7-6 (10/7) in a battle for claws and faces Australian Open debutant Corentin Moute of France in the next round.
In the women's draw, Svetek cruised past world No. 49 Rebecca Sramkova 6-0, 6-2, while Great Britain's Radukanu reached the third round for the first time at Melbourne Park by beating Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 7-5.
“It's going to be tough for sure,” said world number two Svetek, a five-time Grand Slam winner but never a Melbourne champion, as she assessed Radukanu.
Elena Rybakina, the sixth seed and former Wimbledon champion, takes on American wildcard Iva Jovic in straight sets.
Emma Navarro, the eighth seed from the United States, will next face Ons Jabeur after fighting back in three sets to beat 108th-ranked Wang Xiyu of China.
Fourth seed Jasmine Paolini takes on Mexico's Renata Zarazua in late action.
Djokovic, Alcaraz and women's number one and defending champion Aryna Sabalenka play on a hot Friday.
So do Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka, who are on course to meet in the next round if both win.
