Firefighters who battled overnight to contain another blaze that broke out near Los Angeles appear to be making progress, even as dangerous blazes continue across Southern California.
A large-scale response involving planes, bulldozers and 4,000 personnel swung into action as flames raced across the hills in Castaic, 56 kilometers (35 miles) north of Los Angeles.
About 31,000 people were ordered to leave their homes, adding misery to a region already reeling from two deadly wildfires that tore through America's second-largest city this month.
The fledgling Hughes fire continued to grow overnight and by Thursday had consumed 10,000 acres (4,050 hectares), but its rate of growth slowed significantly after an explosive first few hours.
Firefighters said the fire was 14 percent contained — an indication of how much of the perimeter they believe is static.
