Long walk home: Palestinians walk to northern Gaza | News about the conflict between Israel and Palestine

Hundreds of thousands The Palestinians are coming back to the heavily damaged northern Gaza Strip for the first time since the first weeks of the 15-month-old genocide in Gaza.

The return, delayed by two days after a dispute between Hamas and Israel over the release of an Israeli prisoner, is in line with a fragile ceasefire agreement agreed a week ago. The ceasefire aims to end the deadliest and most destructive war ever waged against Gaza and secure the release of captives and prisoners held by Hamas and Israel respectively.

The Palestinians, who have been hiding all these months in miserable tent camps and schools turned into shelters, are eager to return to what remains of their homes, possibly damaged or destroyed by the Israeli onslaught.

Hamas said the return was “a victory for our people and a declaration of failure and defeat for the (Israeli) occupation and transfer plans.”

Israel had ordered the mass evacuation of the north in the early days of the war in October 2023. and blockaded it shortly after ground troops entered.

About one million people fled to the south, while thousands remained in the north, where some of the heaviest fighting and destruction was caused by the war.

Many feared that Israel would make their exodus permanent and pronounced fear of ethnic cleansing after United States President Donald Trump asked Egypt and Jordan to resettle Palestinians from Gaza on their territory.
