Maxi Hughes told Matchroom that he wanted to fight Andy Cruz, who is ranked # 4, in the Eliminator of the WBA lightweight title.
Hughes (28-7-2, 6 CO) is ranked # 5 with WBA just below Cruz (5-0, 2 CO) and won the last two matches since it was stopped in the fourth round of William Zephada on March 16 last year S
Ring magazine reports that Hughes is interested in taking the match with the Olympic medalist in 2020 Andy Cruz. The Cuban talent comes out of winning with a unanimous decision of 10 rounds over Omar Salzido (20-2, 14 KO) last Saturday night in the cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.
Cruz, 29, stole the show from the main battle of events between Diego Pacheko and Stephen Nelson with his dominant performance against Power Puncher Salcido. The results were 99-91, 98-92 and 98-92.
The World Boxing Association will need to sanction Cruz's fight against Hughes in order to be a lightweight category title elimination. It may be a waste of Cruz to go on the WBA route because the current champion Gervanta Davis, chooses and chooses his opposition. He is unlikely to agree to fight a talented fighter like Cruz if WBA orders the battle.
If WBA orders Tank Davis to fight Cruz, he will probably ignore them and if they try to force him, he will surely release the belt. Andy is the complete opposite of the type of opposition that Davis has fought through his career.
Promoter Eddie Hearn mentioned that Cruz could follow the IBF route because Vasily Lomacheko could soon free this belt. Raymond Muratalla is expected to fight to continue after the IBF belt. #6 IBF Cruz has a greater chance of fighting for a belt with this sanctioning organ.
Maxi Hughes will be completely overcome against Cruz. It is not powerful, fast or equipped with the skills needed to be competitive. There is probably no one in the light division to defeat Cruz.
Tank is too limited, Keyshawn Davis has already lost four times, and Shakur Stevenson is missing the crime. Andy Cruz is a non-core king of the 135-lid Division.
