Russian diplomats make the first visit to Syria after the removal of Al-Assad | News

The visit comes when Moscow seeks to secure the fate of two military bases in Syria.

A delegation of Russian officials arrived in Damascus on the first such visit, as the longtime ruler of Syria Bashar al -Assad was removed by opposition fighters.

Al-Assad, a close ally of Moscow, sought asylum in Russia in December, after A Lightning offensive from opposition groups Hydha Tahrir Al Sham (HTS).

The delegation includes the Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mikhail Bogdanov and Alexander Lavland, the special envoy of the Russian president for Syria, the Russian state news agency RIA Novoti said on Tuesday.

The delegation is expected to meet with the actual leader in Syria Ahmad al -Sharaa, as well as with the Foreign Minister.

The visit comes when Moscow seeks to secure the fate of two military bases in Syria, after the denial of Russian President Vladimir Putin that Moscow had suffered a strategic “defeat” in the Middle East after the fall of Al-Assad.

Russia is already focused on securing the future of its naval base through Tartous and his air base in Khmeimim– and on the Mediterranean coast of Syria and the only Moscow's military advance outside the former Soviet Union – with the new Syrian leaders.

Considering Damascus, Osama bin bin Jawaid of Al Jazeera said the conversations would probably cover the potential plans for help, the import of food and the future of military bases.

“It is extraordinary that just six weeks ago these two countries were enemies, they were enemies. Thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of attacks, have been carried out between the two, and now the group that does not run Syria is now through the table with them, “he said.

“They will discuss the future prospects for help, bring wheat to Syria and the future of these bases, both naval and air,” added bin Javaid.

Russia's aggressive military intervention in support of Al-Assad played a major role in turning the course of more than 13 years of Civil War in Syria. Moscow was one of the main supporters of Al-Assad, who intervened in the 2015 war in his favor.

Although the new de -Factical government in Syria has not interrupted the links with Moscow or has requested the full withdrawal of Russian military forces from their base S

After the fall of Al-Assad, Russia diverted its troops and assets from all over Syria to its main base near Latakia. There was no indication that Moscow was preparing to evacuate the base of Khmimim or the Navy at Tartous.

The cancellation of the Tartous Trade Port Modernization Treaty did not affect the Russian military facility, which works on a separate lease.

A visit to the Russian delegation comes against the backdrop of noise from diplomatic activity by the new rulers aimed at building ties and easeing sanctions.

The European Union's foreign ministers on Monday agreed to begin to facilitate sanctions against Syria, starting with key sectors, such as energy.

Saudi Arabia's best diplomat, Prince Faisal Bin Farhan, was accepted by Al Sharaa on Friday, making his first visit after Al-Assad was overthrown.
