The members of the opposition violated a session of the Indian Parliament as they questioned the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi because of his response to the alleged abuse of 104 of its citizens while deported from the United States.
Parliament's lower and upper panels were postponed on Thursday, while legislators chanted slogans and called on the Modi government to deal with the deportment process, which was described as “degrading”.
In a notice to the Secretary -General of the Lower House of Parliament, the opposition congress MP Guauri Gogoy defined the process of deportation as “degradatory”, adding that he raises “serious concerns about their human dignity and rights.”
The deportation came a week before the United States President Donald Trump meets to meet Modi in Washington, Colombia. Migration is also expected to appear during Trump's conversations with Modi.
On Wednesday, an American military aircraft carrying the undocumented immigrants landed in the Sikh holy city of Amritsar in Punjab, part of the mass deportation program written by Trump.
“USBP (border patrol of the US) and partners have successfully returned illegal aliens to India, marking the most distant flight to deportation so far using military transport,” said USBP chief Michael Banks in a Wednesday publication.
“If you go illegally, you will be eliminated,” he said in a publication with a video showing that some men had been guided by a military plane with handcuffs and their feet in chains.
All immigrants, blocking children, were handcuffed during the flight, according to India and the Indian express newspapers, citing unnamed employees in Pengjab, who said they had talked to the deporters.
The India Agency's press conference quotes one of the deported, Jaspal Singh, saying that the handcuffs and chains of the deportments were only removed after they landed in Amritsar.
The 36 -year -old single said they initially thought they had been taken to another camp in the United States.
“Then a police officer told us he was taken to India,” he says.
After the deportors arrived in India, they suffered more hours to control at Amritsar Airport before police accompanied them to small groups of police vehicles.
Some of the deportes were flew on a regular flight to Ahmedabad in Gujarat on Thursday, closer to their homes.
In response, Indian Foreign Minister Subahinezh Jajankar said New Delhi was committed to the United States to ensure that undocumented Indian immigrants were not abused while deported.
Jaishankar told parliament that the deportation process, followed by US authorities, is not new and allows the use of restrictions on the return of immigrants to their countries.
He added that “the obligation of all countries to return their citizens if it is established that they live illegally abroad.”
Parliament Chairman Om Birla also tried to reassure the opposition MPs, stating that “the foreign country also has its own rules and regulations.”
Outside Parliament, the opposition MPs, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, continued their protest as they demanded a response from the Modi government. Some of them wore handcuffs and wore posters that said, “People, not prisoners.”
Although Indian immigrants were deported by previous US administrations, Washington was using a military aircraft for the first time to do so.
India cooperates with the United States and said she was ready to accept the deported Indians after a check.
New Delhi says it is against the undocumented immigration, mainly because it is associated with several forms of organized crime.
The implementation of immigration laws has been “critically important” to the US security and public safety, said a spokesman for the US Embassy in Delhi.
“The United States policy is true to implement immigration laws against all unacceptable and removable aliens,” the spokesman added.
A Pew Research Center report said that by 2022 India was ranked third – after Mexico and El Salvador – in the list of countries with the largest number of undocumented immigrants – 725,000 – living in the US.
