Senegal is distance from the colonial past, following the trend that has been moving in West and Central Africa since 2022.
France and Senegal have set the conditions for the withdrawal of all French soldiers located in the West African country by the end of this year.
The two countries said in a statement on Wednesday that they are setting up a joint committee that will monitor the “departure of the French elements” from the country and “restitution of (military) bases” by the end of the year.
The foreign ministries of both countries have said they intend to work on a “new defense and security partnership”, which will take into account “strategic priorities of all countries.”
In November, Senegal President Basiro Diomay Faye announced that the French army bases were “incompatible” with the sovereignty of the country and 350 soldiers should leave.
This move came just before Senegal marked the 80th anniversary of Massacres of West African soldiers from colonial forces in 1944.
The Soldiers of the Tirals Senegalais, who fought in the war of France against Nazi Germany, protested against salary and poor living conditions when the colonial soldiers fired at them.

French President Emmanuel Macron admitted in a letter to Fay last year that France had committed a “slaughter”.
The rejection of Senegal from its colonial past continues a trend in West and Central Africa, where nations are lowering ties with France.
At the end of January, France completed the withdrawal of their troops from Chad while Ivory Early announced the withdrawal of the French forces.
The tone was very different from Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, whose military governments collectively dumped about 4,300 French soldiers from their countries in 2022 in all three countriesFrance had refused to support the upheavals that brought them to power.
