Tulsi GabardA former Democratic Woman Congress has been confirmed as director of national intelligence in the United States, a room in the cabinet level in the administration of President Donald Trump.
Confirmation on Wednesday in the Senate is considered one of Trump's most spells of the second term.
Nevertheless, the Republican Senate votes 52-48, mostly on party lines, to approve Gabard for the post that leads 18 agencies in the US intelligence community.
The only Republican who voted against her was Senator Mitch McConnellwho has been the leader of the party in the Chamber for 18 years until the end of last year.
Gabard was an unconventional choice given her previous comments, expressing sympathy for the Russian president Vladimir Putin And her support for the government leak Edward Snowden.
Gabard also travels to Syria in 2017 to meet now leader Bashar al-AssadA move that has attracted bilateral condemnation, given the allegations of widespread violations of human rights under his leadership.
In a statement, McConnell expressed constant concerns about Gabard's nomination.
“The nation should not worry that the intelligence ratings that the president is receiving are tainted by a director of national intelligence with a history of anxious gaps in judgment,” he writes, calling Gabard an “unnecessary risk.”
The Director of National Intelligence Director was set up to deal with the failures of intelligence set out by the September 11, 2001 attacks.
However, the Republicans are increasingly criticizing the office, saying it has become too big and politicized. Trump himself has long been looking at national intelligence services with suspicion.
“The intelligence community must focus on its main mission, collect intelligence and provide impartial analysis of this information,” Senate's Republican leader John Tun said in his approval of Gabard.
As a director of national intelligence, Gabard will have wide access to classified materials and will serve as a major adviser on the president's intelligence.
Gabard, a military veteran with isolationist views, takes on the role as Trump works to reshape huge parts of the federal government through costs and staff.
For example, the CIA, one of the intelligence agencies, now under the command of Gabard, confirmed last week that it was offering buying to promote the voluntary resignation of staff.
In the meantime Ministry of Government Efficiency Obtaining access to sensitive government information on intelligence operations.
During her Hedges to confirm Last month, Gabard faced “an interrogation of his previous Snowden defense,” a former security contractor who has leaked classified documents, revealing the scope of US monitoring programs.
Faced with criminal charges of violating the spying law, Snowden fled the United States in 2013 and received asylum in Russia.
Some senators were noticeably disappointed by Gabard's refusal to call Snowden a traitor.
“Edward Snowden violated the law,” she said. “The fact is that he also – even when he violates the law – released information that reveals outrageous, illegal and unconstitutional programs.”
Gabard's visit for 2017 with Al-Assad was another Flashpoint. Critics have accused her of granting the legitimacy and the emergence of US support to Al-Assad, who has been accused of war crimes.
Her comments, which question whether Al-Assad used chemical weapons against Syrians, stimulates further disputes.
However, during her hearing to confirm, Gabard defended the meeting, saying that she used the opportunity to press the Syrian leader in his recording of human rights.
“I asked him difficult questions about the actions of his own regime, the use of chemical weapons and the brutal tactics used against his own people,” Gabard said.
She also gave up criticism of a past statement stating that Russia had “legitimate security concerns”, which accelerated his invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
At the beginning of the vote on Wednesday, it was not clear whether Gabard's nomination would succeed.
Several Republicans, including Todd Young from Indiana, have expressed fears. In the end, Young fell under pressure from Trump's allies as Musk, who marked him a “puppet in deep countries” on social media.
Later, Musk deleted the publication and talks to Young. Young then announced his decision to vote on Gabard's confirmation, and Musk posted an audited message: “I stand corrected. Senator Young will be a great ally for the restoration of the power of people from the huge, chosen bureaucracy. “
In the end, everyone but one of the Republicans in the Senate voted in favor of Gabard.
The skeptics in the party have said they have been won by their promise to reorient themselves in the main missions of the office: coordinating the federal intelligence work and serves as the main intelligence advisor to the president.
“While I continue to fear certain positions she has previously occupied, I appreciate her commitment to take advantage of the huge scope of the agency,” said Senator Lisa Murkovski, a Republican from Alaska.
She added that Gabard would bring “independent thinking” to work.
Gabard's confirmation was another victory for Trump, as he insisted on securing the quick approval of the Senate for all his high -level candidates.
The Democrats who opposed her nomination noted that Gabard had no attempt to work for a reconnaissance agency and asked if he would face Trump if necessary.
“This is an insult to people who have dedicated their lives and have been harmed to confirm it in this position,” said Elisa Slopkin, a democratic senator of Michigan and a former CIA analyst.
Gabard, a presidential candidate in 2020, left the Democratic Party two years later, marking it “elitist Kabbalah”.
She was independent until last year when she supported Trump and joined the Republican Party.
