Another senior federal prosecutor resigned from the United States Ministry of Justice against the background of the pressure from President Donald Trump's administration.
Reuters news agency announced that Denise Cheng had left her post on Tuesday after led by the US Crime Division for the US County for Colombia.
In her resignation letter received from several US news agencies, she pointed out her long career in public service.
“I am proud to serve the US Department of Justice and this office for more than 24 years,” Cheng wrote.
“I was sworn in to support and protect the Constitution and fulfilled this obligation true.”
But she explained that she was ordered to resign after refusing to launch a penalty probe, which she thinks she is not deserved.
The requested probe is related to a contract assigned to the administration of Trump's predecessor and former election rival, Democrat Joe Biden.
Cheng wrote that she had been asked to launch a major investigation into the jury of the legality of the contract. But she said that after the study, she found no evidence to justify such a probe.
She was then asked to seek freezing assets, preventing the payment of funds from being paid.
So Cheng sent the bank, including a letter “Recommended for a 30-day administrative freezing of certain assets”.
But employees of the Trump administration pushed her to send a second letter, stating that the request was part of a criminal investigation.
Cheung identifies Ed Martin, temporarily acting head of the US Prosecutor's Office in Washington, Colombia County, as one of the employees who gave her orders. She turned to her letter to him.
“When I explained that the amount of evidence did not support this action, you stated that you believe there was sufficient evidence,” she writes.
“Based on the evidence I have reviewed, I still do not believe that there is sufficient evidence to issue the letter you describe, including sufficient evidence to tell the bank, that there is a probable reason to retrieve certain identified accounts.”
Trump declared On Monday, he had nominated Martin to permanently take on the role of the US lawyer.
Martin with a far -right activist, Martin had helped to raise money for riots involved in the US attack on January 6, 2021, which was led by Trump's supporters.
He also played a role in the organization of a rally “Stop the theft”, which spread a false claim that Trump's defeat in 2020 was due to fraud with voters.
Cheung said her actions are needed to maintain the standards of the US law firm. “Everything we do is rooted in following the facts and the law and the observance of our moral, ethical and legal obligations,” she writes.
Her departure on Tuesday was the last in a series of resignations from the Ministry of Justice, as prosecutors deny actions that they consider unethical under Trump.
Last week, at least seven lawyers at the Ministry of Justice left their posts after the Trump administration called for them to dismiss corruption allegations against New York Mayor Eric Adams.
Recently, Trump and Adams had a rapprochement, with the mayor agreeing to participate in the president's immigration initiatives.
Several lawyers of the Ministry of Justice have indicated that the decision to reject the charges against Adams is politically motivated and not on the basis of evidence.
“Any US assistant lawyer would know that our laws and traditions do not allow the use of prosecutorial law to influence other citizens, thus much less elected employees,” said lead prosecutor Hagan Skotten in his resignation letter.
“If no lawyer within the president's ears is ready to give him this advice, then I expect you will eventually find someone who is sufficient from a fool or a coward enough to submit your proposal. But I will never be me. “
The current Social Security Administration Commissioner Michel King also resigned over the weekend as a result of the Ministry of Government Management (Doge) to access sensitive personal information.
On Tuesday, at a press conference from his resort Mar-A-Lago in Florida, Trump briefly turned to King's departure, suggesting that she had not been ready.
“When you fire someone, they always resign and then say,” We resigned, “he said, accusing the Social Security Administration of Massive Fraud. However, it does not offer evidence to justify this claim.
