The UN warns M23 progress threatens the regional conflict in the eastern part of the DRC | Human Rights News

The M23 armed group is progressing in strategic zones in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after taking two key cities, the UN warned of the United Nations warned, emphasizing the threat of regional conflict.

In recent weeks, there has been a rapid progression of supported by Rwanda M23, which has taken over huge tracts on the Eastern DRC, including Goma and Bukav.

“If our information is correct, (M23) continues to progress to other strategic areas in North and South Kivu,” UN Secretary -General of the Great Lakes Secretary, Huang Saya, told The Counter.

He said that while the “deep intentions of the M23 and their support” remain unknown, “the risk of a regional fire is more relevant than ever”, adding that such a conflict would have “catastrophic” consequences.

Fighting in recent weeks has sparked fears of repetition of the Second War in Congo from 1998 to 2003, which attracted many African countries and led to millions of deaths, disease and hunger.

The head of the UN peacekeeping mission (Monusco), Bintu Kate also expressed concern about the progress of the M23 – now “at the intersection of the three borders between the DRC, Rwanda and Burundi”.
