In the early weeks of the war, Russia advanced from the north, east and south, quickly seized vast areas of Ukrainian territory.
The Russian forces were very enveloped by Irpin, a key portal to Kiev, in an attempt to break the protection of the capital, leaving much of the city's residential areas and the infrastructure in ruins.
On February 25, the Ukrainian forces deliberately destroyed the bridge over the Irpin River to prevent the Russian advance to Kiev.
Meanwhile, the Russian occupation lasted for several weeks. It was not until the Russian forces withdrew from the area that the true degree of what happened in Bucha was revealed, with streets, strewn with the bodies of killed civilians, many with hands tied.

The siege of Maripol, a key south port and an industrial center, began on the first day of Russia's full -scale invasion. By the beginning of March, the city was completely surrounded, grabbing civilians and defenders. The theater for the dramatic Maripol, a designated shelter for civilians, was destroyed on an air attack on March 16th. The Ukrainian forces installed the last stand in the Azovstal steel plant, as Russian troops strengthened their attack, besieging the scattered industrial complex with heavy artillery and air attacks, before the final control in May 2022.
The siege of Maripol was one of the most deadly and most destructive battles of the war. Ukrainian officials have evaluated tens of thousands of civilian deaths, while Ukraine, United Nations and other international organizations have accused Russia of war crimes.
The Russian forces captured the nuclear power plant of the attachment, the largest in Europe, in the area of the attachment in March 2022 after intense fighting. On March 4, 2022, Russian troops attacked the plant, leading to international fears of a nuclear disaster. Although the reactors have not been struck, the firing causes fires and damage to the auxiliary buildings.
Since then, Russia has maintained control of the plant, turning it into a military fortress. Despite repeated calls from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), safety concerns continue as the interruption of firing and electricity continue to threaten nuclear stability in the region.

By April, Russia controlled 27 percent of Ukraine, but the fierce resistance stopped forward, turning the war into a prolonged conflict.
