The European Commission says it will react “healthy and immediately” against unjustified commercial barriers.
The United States President Donald Trump said he would impose a 25 percent tariff for imports from the European Union, claiming that the block was created to “fuck” its country.
As he spoke at the first meeting of his cabinet on Wednesday, Trump said a decision was made on the tariffs and would be announced “very soon”.
“This will be 25 percent, in general,” Trump told reporters. “And it will be cars and all other things.”
Returning to its regular speaking point that the United States is being treated unfairly in trade, Trump claims that the 27-member Union does not accept US cars and agricultural products while the United States is accepting “all of them”.
Currently, the EU imposes a 10 percent tariff for vehicles in the United States, which is four times larger than the tariff applied by the United States for the import of European passenger cars.
However, the United States is applying a 25 percent tariff for imported pickups.
“Look, let's be honest, the European Union is formed to fuck the United States,” Trump said.
“That's the purpose of this and they have done a good job.”
Trump's comments attracted a quick response from the European Commission, the executive hand of the block, which said the world's largest single market area was “grace” to the United States.
“The EU will respond firmly and immediately against unjustified barriers to free and fair trade, including when tariffs are used to challenge legal and non -discriminatory policies,” a spokesman said.
“The EU will always protect European business, workers and users from unjustified tariffs.”
Carl Bilt, the Prime Minister of Sweden from 1991 to 1994, told X that Trump had a “seriously distorted” view of history and that the EU was actually created to “prevent war on the European continent”.
Trump's latest trade Salvo comes against the background of increased tension between Washington and Brussels because of the approach of his America First administration to international cases.
Along with the disintegration of trade tensions, Trump has caused concern about his commitment to the security of Europe and the future of the Northern Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) with his information to Russian President Vladmimir Putin and verbal attacks on Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski.
