The Chinese Ministry of Commerce blames Washington for “shift guilt and inhibiting responsibility” for opioid crisis.
China has warned the United States of “counteracting” after US President Donald Trump has announced that he will impose new tariffs on Chinese goods in response to Fentanyl smuggling.
Trump on Thursday marked an additional 10 percent duty on Chinese imports until he announced that his 25 percent tariffs for Mexican and Canadian goods will continue on March 4.
Trump told the Truth Social that the new tariff, which will come to the top of a 10 percent duty imposed on Chinese goods earlier this month, will be imposed next month in response to the “very high and unacceptable levels” of fentanyl entering the US.
Putting on Trump's comments on Friday, China's Ministry of Commerce said Chinese drug laws are among the world's largest and Washington “shifts guilt and shakes responsibility.”
“China is calling for the United States not to repeat its mistakes and to return to the right path of resolving disputes through equal dialogue as soon as possible,” a spokesman for the ministry said.
“If the United States insists on continuing this mode of action, China will take all necessary counteraction to protect its legal rights and interests.
“We have repeatedly stated that unilateral tariffs violate the rules of the World Trade Organization and undermine the multifaceted trading system,” the spokesman added.
More than 74,000 people were killed by an overdose of synthetic opioids in the United States in 2023, according to disease control centers.
China is the main source of so -called predecessors chemicals used to perform fentanyl, Mexican cartel traffic, according to the US administration to use drugs.
Beijing said he had worked with the United States to deal with the delivery of fentanyl, including the addition of fentanyl substances to his list of controlled drugs and performing “extensive, practical cooperation in the field of drug control”.
