A Syrian security source told Al Jazeera that 15 security officers were killed in “various armed ambush”.
The artillerymen loyal to the desired Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad have killed at least 15 security officers in the ambush in the coastal province of Latakia, a source of security told Al Jazeera.
The attacks took place on Thursday near the city of Jabeh in the province of Latakia, part of the coastal area that formed the heart of the Alavit minority sect to which the Al-Assad family belongs.
A Syrian security source told Al Jazeera's Arab network that 15 security officers were killed in “various armed ambush”.
“The Syrian state will impose its powers on all outdoor groups and will not allow the security to be threatened,” the source said.
Considering Damascus, Al Jazeera's Resul Serdar said tension was rising after attacks.
“After the fall of the Assad regime three months ago, this is probably one of the biggest security challenges that the new government faces,” he said.
The central government has sent reinforcements consisting of “dozens and dozens of military vehicles” to the city of Latakia from several governments, including Hama, Homs and Idlib, he said.
Shortly after the attack, a video was released from the Assad era commander, saying that a resistance group was formed against the new government called the Coast Shield, Serdar said.
The security director of the province of Latakia has previously told the Syrian State Agency Sana that security forces are confronted with the province of Latakia with armed groups loyal to the Special Forces Commander of Assad Shael Al-Hasan.
Latakia security forces have announced that the situation has already been controlled and that several of the attackers have been killed, with “many other captured,” Serdar said. A police officer was also announced in the coastal town of Tartus.
The Mediterranean coastal regions in Syria have emerged as one of the main challenges for the security of temporary President Ahmed al -Sharaa, as his government is working to consolidate the country's control.
