SDF controls much of northeastern Syria and has been holding on to Damascus control for years.
Syria says it has reached an agreement with the Kurdish Syrian democratic forces to integrate the latter with state institutions.
The Syrian Presidency made the message on Monday and released images at a signing ceremony, including Syrian temporary acting Ahmed al -Sharaa and SDF, Mazloum Abdi.
The agreement emphasizes the unity of Syria and provided that “all civil and military institutions in northeastern Syria” are united “in the Syrian state administration, including border crossroads, airport and oil and gas deposits.”
US -supported SDF has controlled a semi -autonomous region in northeastern Syria since 2015.
The agreement, if attached, would bring this territory under the full control of the Syrian central government.
Al Jazeera's Resul Serdar, reporting from the Syrian capital Damascus, said the deal was one of the biggest developments after the fall of longtime President Bashar al-Assad in the hands of the Syrian opposition forces led by Al Sharaa in December.
“Whether (Syria) will remain like a territory or it was a parce, it has always been a sticking point,” Serdar said.
The agreement involves the termination of fire throughout Syria and the support of SDF in the fight against Pro -ssad fighters.
It also includes confirmation that the Kurdish people are an integral part of Syria and is entitled to citizenship and guaranteed constitutional rights.
Al Jazeera's Serdar said it was not clear what the exact constitutional status would be on the territory controlled by SDF and whether it retains any autonomy.
He also noted that in a multi -ethnic and religious country like Syria, there may now be demands to give special status to other groups.
“For Damascus, once you have given a special status to a particular ethnic affiliation or a particular sect, then the question is (for) other sects such as Alavites or Druzi, they will also have a special status?… This is not clear so far,” Serdar said.
Discussions over SDF integration In the Syrian state, it continued since the fall of Al-Assad, but they were hampered by sections encouraged over the years of war. The SDF had a smaller position to Al-Assad than other opposition forces and was accused of being union for the regime.
Meanwhile, the SDF leadership is secular and bound by the Kurdish Nationalist Party of Kurdistan (PKK)-repeatedly encountered Syrian fighters supported by the Turks and have encountered attacks by the Turkish itself.
PKK has been fighting a rebel against the Turkish state since 1984. Turkish, together with the European Union and the United States, according to the Group a “terrorist” organization.
However, this did not stop the US, supporting SDF, largely because of its usefulness in opposition to ISIL (ISIS), which had previously controlled parts of northeastern Syria before finally defeated in 2019 by a US-led coalition involving SDF.
SDF faces turbulent regional and international changes that can explain the terms of the agreement with the Syrian central government.
According to the new US President Donald Trump, Washington has Make plans for withdrawal From Syria.
“Syria is his own mess. They got enough mess there. They do not need us in everyone, “Trump said earlier this year.
And a message on February 27 by the closed PKK Abdullah Okalan leader, calling for the group to Put your hands and dissolvealso added pressure to SDF.
