Officials say that the Southern Command of the US military, who explore many options from working with Panama to hostilities.
Pentagon is reported to investigate the military Options for the Panama Canal To ensure our current access to the strategically important waterway, after requesting the White House.
Reuters news agency announced on Thursday that an US employee spoke on condition of anonymity stated that a document described as a temporary national security guide by the new Trump administration has called on the US forces to view military defense capabilities Access to the Panama Canal.
In response to reports of possible US military action, the Panama government said it would remain “firm” in protecting its sovereignty against the backdrop of news that US President Donald Trump was considering options aimed at “Recovering” the strategic channelS
“With regard to these statements, I have nothing more to say that Panama remains firm in defense in their territory, its channel and its sovereignty,” Panama Foreign Minister Javier Martinez Aca told Thursday to reporters on Thursday.
“Let it be clear, the channel belongs to the Panamani And it will remain so, “he added.
Tensions between the US and Panama again deviated from Trump's repeated threats to “return” the Panama Canal.
The news of US military planning was reported earlier this week by NBC, citing an internal note from the Trump administration and remarks from unnamed US officials.
Officials have told the network that the Southern US military command will look at several options, including working with Panama's military or taking the channel by force. They also said that the American invasion of Panama was still unlikely at that time.
According to the reports, the note, however, asked the Pentagon to “provide reliable military capabilities to provide a fair and unlimited US military and commercial access to the Panama Canal.”
The Panama Canal passes through the narrow prime of Panama, connecting North and South America, and is very valuable because it connects the Pacific to the Caribbean and the Atlantic.
Although more than 100 years old, the waterway has been in the world spotlight since Trump took office in January.
The US president said in an address to the US Congress last week that his administration “will restore the Panama Channel and we have already started to do so.”
Although frequent remarks about the channel, Trump has not yet spoken publicly about how the channel will be taken and whether the US military will be involved. The United States acquired the rights to build and operate the channel in the early 20th century. In a contract signed in 1979, during the President's Administration Jimmy Carter, the US agreed to transfer control of the Panama Channel at the end of 1999.
But the US and Panama are related to the treaty to protect the channel against any threat to its neutrality and are allowed to take unilateral action to do so.
The control of the channel is also a dispute between Washington and Beijing, as Trump says earlier – without evidence – that China secretly controls the waterway.
Both Panama and China have been denied any foreign intervention.
Until recently, two of the four main ports of the channel were owned by the majority of the conglomers based in Hong Kong, CK Hutchison Holdings.
After weeks of control, the conglomerate sold last week sold the bigger part of its global port operations – covering 23 countries – on a consortium of investors led by the US company Blackrock for $ 22.8 billion.
Although the sale may have reassured Trump so far, now it seems that the company is crossing the Chinese Communist Party.
This week, the pro-Bajing Hong Kung Pao has published a timid option called the Blackrock Deal “betrayal” of the Chinese people and CK Hutchison, “invertebrate flexible, seeking profit, overcoming profits.”
Later, the newspaper's comment was uploaded to the China's representative offices website in Hong Kong and Macau, which shows tacit approval of its content.
