Russia will spare the life of Ukrainian soldiers in the West Kursk region if Kiev called them to surrender, said President Vladimir Putin after US President Donald Trump has called him to avoid “horrible slaughter” there.
Ukraine denied their forces in Kursk to be surrounded, describing the claim as a Russian fiction, but President Volodimir Zelenski on Friday described the situation for the Ukrainian forces there as “very difficult”.
Trump wrote on social media that he had asked the Russian president to spare the lives of thousands of Ukrainians, who believed were “completely surrounded” and vulnerable.
“I strongly asked President Putin to be spared from their lives. That would be a terrible slaughter that is not visible since World War II, “he said.
Putin, turning to his security advice, said he had read Trump's complaint and found out Trump's call to take into account the humanitarian considerations.
“In this regard, I would like to emphasize that if (Ukrainian troops) put their weapons and surrender, they will guarantee them life and decent treatment in accordance with international law and the laws of the Russian Federation,” Putin said.
“For effective implementation of the appeal of the US President, a corresponding order from the military-political leadership of Ukraine is needed in order for the military units to put weapons and surrender.”
Ukrainian forces in Russia Kursk have fallen under increasing pressure in recent days, with a Russian counteraphytensional struggle much of the Earth Ukraine, captured there last summer, denying Kiev a vital point of leverage over Moscow in all potential conversations for a truce.
Russian troops have also crossed the border of Ukrainian territory in the region of sums facing Kursk.
Trump's comments come after his envoy to the Middle East, Steve Vikoff, talks with Putin in Moscow on Thursday about a US proposal for 30 days of fire termination.
Kiev said he was ready to accept the proposal while Putin said on Thursday that he supported the idea of ending fire but presented a a series of conditions This will have to be met before Moscow agrees to the truce.
Trump described the conversations as “very good and productive” and said he had “a very good chance of this terrible, bloody war at last end.”
Zelenski said he saw a good chance to put an end to War With Russia and called the US and other allies to put pressure on Moscow.
“We currently have a good chance of ending this war quickly and securing peace. We have a solid understanding of security with our European partners, “Zezhanski told X.
Speaking to reporters, he reiterated his belief that Russian President Vladimir Putin would delay the reaches as long as possible.
“If there is a strong answer from the United States, they will not allow them to play around. And if there are steps that Russia is not afraid of, they will slow down the process, “Zelenski said.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Friday that Putin-who was concerned that Ukraine would use any truce for regrouping-used the late night with Vikof to convey information and “signals” to Trump.
“There are certainly reasons to be cautiously optimistic,” Peskov said, “(Putin) said he supported President Trump's position on an agreement, but he expressed some questions that need to be answered together”
Peskov said the time of a phone call between the presidents would be developed after Vikof had informed Trump.
Putin said he wanted Ukraine to miss his ambitions to join NATO, Russia to control the integrity of the four Ukrainian regions he claimed to be his own, and the size of the Ukrainian army was limited.
He also clarified that he wanted Western sanctions to facilitate the presidential election to be held in Ukraine, which Kiev says is premature while military position remains in force.
Tony Brenton, a former British ambassador to Russia, said the war in Ukraine was catastrophically catastrophically for the Russians and also cost the Kremlin a lot of money, leaving Putin a desire to “make a conclusion that is the sale of his people”.
“But there are some Russian concerns about it. First, they win this battle in Kursk and may want to end this before the truce comes into force. Second, the cessation of fire does not mean that everyone stops shooting … You have to have some system … which is a police officer, “he told Al Jazeera.
“So in these conditions there is a delay and negotiations to get the truce on the spot,” he said.
“I think there is actually a real chance … that one can be optimistic, that we will get the termination of fire … In the next few weeks and there will be negotiations again for long -term peace,” he added.
