Italian media say 10 people have been rescued as demand continues for more survivors.
Six migrants and refugees were killed and 40 had disappeared after the boat they were traveling was in the Mediterranean, says an employee of the United Nations.
The representative of the UNCBA Chiara Cardletti said on Wednesday that the inflatable boat had left Tunisia on Monday, carrying 56 people, adding that “still too many dead in a new shipwreck in the Mediterranean.”
The vessels of the Italian Coast Guard have saved 10 people and have resumed the search for other survivors, according to the Italian Agency Ansa. It says that the shipwreck consisted near Lamudusa Island.
The survivors said that some of the missing people fell overboard in the rough seas, according to AGI News, adding that the travelers on the boat were from Coast D'Ivoire, Mali, Gambia and Cameroon.
Media reports added that a separate group of 40 people landed on the lamps after traveling from SFAX to Tunisia on metal boats.
On Tuesday, there were five landings in Lamidus, with a total of 213 people arriving, which brought the number of people to the island's reception center to 230, the reports added.
About 8,743 people have arrived in Italy so far this year, just more than arrival last year, according to the Italian Interior Ministry.
Thehe International Migration Organization (IOM), a UN -related organization, says over 31,500 people have died or disappeared in the Mediterranean since 2014. The figure is 246 this year.
