Doctoral student researcher Badar Khan Suri, accused of “spreading Hamas propaganda and promoting anti -Semitism.”
Indian doctoral studies in the United States, who spoke against Israel's war in Gaza, faced deportation after being detained with US President Donald Trump Immigration repressionS
Badar Khan Suri, a PhD at Georgetown University in Washington, Colombia, has been designated to deport Hamas Propaganda and Promotion of Anti -Semitism in Social Media, Trisha McLeflin, Assistant Secretary at the Ministry of Interior Security (DHS).
“Suri has close relationships with a famous or suspect terrorist who is a senior Hamas adviser,” McLaughlin said at X.
“The Secretary of State issued a determination on March 15, 2025 that Suri's activities and presence in the United States make it deportable in accordance with Section 237 (a), letter (c) (i).”
McLaughlin did not provide evidence of his claim to relationships between Suri and Hamas, the group that runs Gaza.
Suri, who is studying at the Muslim-Christian understanding center at Alaed Talal in Georgetown, is currently being held at an American establishment for customs and customs applications at Alexandria International Airport in Louisiana, according to ICE's online locality.
Ahmad Hassan, a lawyer representing Suri, filed a petition for the release of the researcher in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, according to a court document online.
Hassan did not immediately answer a request for comment by Al Jazeera.
In a statement to Al Jazeera, a spokesman at the University of Georgetown said Suri received a student visa to carry out “doctoral research to build peace in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
“We are not aware of him to engage in illegal activity and have not received a reason for his detention,” the spokesman said.
“We support the rights of the members of our community for free and finding investigations, discussion and debate, even if the main ideas can be difficult, contradictory or undesirable. We expect the legal system to consider this case fairly.”
And an account using Suri's name and Georgetown's affiliation contains a number of criticism of Israel and expressions of support for the Palestinian cause.
In a June publication, the account has accused India of being a “genocide stimulant” after the Quds News Palestinian network has published footage that is believed to have remains of Israeli rocket, referred to as Made In India.
“From the fact that he is an ally of the Palestinians, to the possibility of genocide. What kind of disgrace for making in India, to deliver Israeli missiles so that Palestinian children can be broken,” Suri said.
“Changing the values of money in the blood. Shame.”
A publication in October 2023, the account bearing the name of Suri said that many Indians support Israel for “the hatred of Muslims” rather than “The love of Israel.”
Suri's retention comes less than two weeks after Trump's DHS arrest A student at the University of Colombia Mahmoud Khalil over his participation in propalist protests.
On Wednesday, the Federal Court ruled that Halil, a permanent resident of the United States, could continue with a legal challenge against the Trump administration order for his deportation.
Judge Jesse Furman ruled that Halil's argument that his removal would violate his free speech and the proper rights of the process under the US Constitution justify a “careful review”.
