Late loading to China's Grand Prix sees Lewis Hamilton to provide his first Sprint Formula 1 since he joined Ferrari.
Lewis Hamilton surprised the crowd and himself, securing his girl position to the Ferrari sprint in the last moments of qualification of the Grand Prix of China Formula 1.
Hamilton arrived in China after a disappointing competition to open the season Last weekend in Australiawhere the 10th ended. He only succeeded in the fourth fastest in opening practice on Friday for a modest improvement in Shanghai.
He headed the first section of Sprint's qualification before the dominant McLaren of Lando Norris took over in SQ2. An aborted tour of McLaren's driver, after a mistake in his last lap, handed the chance to Hamilton-and seven-time world champion took him in a stunning style with less than a minute.
Hamilton's time was only 18 thousand a second ahead of Max Verstapen on Red Bull, as McLaren's teammate of Norris Oscar Piathrasi Third. Ferrari's Charles Lecturer was fourth, with George Russell of Mercedes ending the top five.
“I didn't expect this result, but so, so happy and so proud,” said Hamilton. “I think obviously the last race was a disaster. We knew clearly that there was more productivity in the car, but we just couldn't get it extracted,” Melbourne.
“So to come here for a song I love – and the car really comes to life. The team did a fantastic job to prepare the car and yes, I'm a little in shock.”
