Nearly 9,000 deaths have been confirmed worldwide, but the real fees are probably much higher.
Nearly 9,000 people died last year, trying to cross the borders, says the United Nations Migration Agency.
The death issue set a new gloomy record for the fifth consecutive year. The number of deaths on migration routes has doubled since 2020.
The International Migration Organization (IOM) registers 8,938 deaths of migrants in 2024. The real number of deaths is probably much higher, given that many deaths remain unregistered or undocumented, said a message from MOM on Friday.
“The rise in deaths is horrified in itself, but the fact that thousands remain unidentified every year is even more tragic,” says Julia Black, the coordinator of the IOM Missing Migrants Project.
The IOM Deputy General Director for Operations Daniels said: “Increasing deaths in so many regions in the world shows why we need an international, overall response that can prevent more tragic loss of life.”
“Behind every number is a person, someone for whom the loss is detrimental,” he added.
Asia was the region with 2788 casualties, followed by the Mediterranean with 2452 and Africa with 2242. The final data are not yet for America, but at least 1233 deaths (including 341 in the Caribbean) occurred in 2024.
At least 233 migrants lost their lives in Europe and 174 in Darien's abyss between Colombia and Panama, a new record.
According to IOM, migrants are all the people who leave their place of residence for some reason for some period of time, whether voluntary or unintentionally. Some seek refuge because they run away from war or violence.
The news of the record state of death comes days after the agency has announced that it has stopped many “life -saving” programs around the world and fires hundreds of employees due to the reduction of the help of the United States affecting millions of vulnerable migrants and refugees around the world.
The Geneva -based Mom is one of several groups that help the displaced people who have been affected by the main abbreviations of US assistance, forcing him to scathing or close programs that he believes will have a strong influence on migrants.
