Karen Bass says the police hour for part of the city center will take effect at 20:00 local time (03:00 GMT Wednesday).
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has announced a police hour as a small part of the center of Los Angeles against the backdrop of protests against the immigration repression of the United States President Donald Trump.
The policeman will apply for an area of 1 square mile (2.6 sq.
“Many businesses have already been affected or vandalized. Last night there were 23 businesses that were looted and I think if you were traveling through the center of LA, graffiti were everywhere and caused significant damage to business and a number of properties,” Bass said.
“So my message to you is: if you do not live or work in the center of LA, avoid the area. Law enforcement agencies will arrest persons who break the police and you will be persecuted.”
BAS said it expects the police hour to remain in force for several days, but stressed that the order was applied only to a small part of the city covering 502 square miles (1300 square km).
“I think it is important to point out this, not to minimize the vandalism and violence that happened there – is significant – because it is extremely important to know that what is happening in this 1 square mile does not affect the city,” Bass said.
“Some of the images of protests and violence give the appearance that this is a crisis throughout the city and not.”
